He was born in Carlisle, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. Later in life he came to western Pennsylvania with his family, locating first in Allegheny County, where he farmed for some years. Still later he moved to Indiana County, where he spent the remainder of his days, dying on the farm he had acquired.
Until the formation of the Republican party he was a Whig. Early uniting with the United Presbyterian Church, he held to its faith the remainder of his life, and died firm in its creed.
