He was educated in the public schools, and grew to manhood on the farm, continuing there as manager until he was twenty-five years of age. He then moved to Uniontown, Pennsylvania. For six years he was engaged in the sale of agricultural implements; then for three years was traveling salesman for William Deering Machine Company. In 1887 he established an office in Uniontown for the transaction of real estate and insurance business. This business he followed during the succeeding twenty-one years most successfully. He handled an exceedingly large acreage of coal and timber land in Pennsylvania and West Virginia besides farm and city properties. He operated largely in lands on his own account and in the production of coal and coke. He was identified with these interests in Uniontown for many years and was a recognized authority. His land investments included several additions to the city of Uniontown and the erection of many buildings. He was a director of the National Bank of Uniontown for several years.
The church of his choice was the Baptist, of which he was a member for thirty-nine years or more. For thirty years he belonged to the Great Bethel congregation, serving as treasurer, deacon, trustee and chairman of building committee. His fraternal orders were the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Heptasophs, Modern Woodmen and Royal Arcanum. In politics he was a Democrat. His favorite sport was hunting, and he made frequent trips to selected localities where game abounded.
His beautiful home was filled with pictures of the old masters and all the evidence of a cultured, appreciative mind.
