Different sources give different accounts of his ancestry.

He was born in Scotland and was one of the seven sons who came to America. He grew to manhood in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, later moving to West Newton, Westmoreland County, where he died at an advanced age. [GPHFC, 168]
