He received his education at the common schools of Beaver County, Pennsylvania, and beginning in early childhood worked on a farm. In 1873 he purchased his own farm of 120 acres, which was beautifully situated, and of rich soil.
He was a member of the Presbyterian church; in politics a Democrat.
