He was a child of six years when the family settled in Wayne township, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, where he was reared and educated. He attended public school and Dayton Academy. Farming was always his occupation. From 1891 until his death he was a resident of Mahoning township, where he was elected to various public offices, serving as assessor and school director. In politics he was associated with the Republican party. He was a member of the Lutheran Church at Eddyville.
He and his wife had eight children, five of whom grew to maturity.
