The present Drake family are of Scotch-Irish descent and trace their probable lineage back to the family of Sir Francis Drake, the celebrated English admiral. Three of his nephews, Francis, James and William Drake, came to America about the year 1700, and sailed into the mouth of the James river, Francis settling in the Carolinas, James in Virginia and William in New Jersey, from whence the Drakes came to central Pennsylvania and were among the early settlers.
