He was reared on a farm, the pursuits of which he always followed. He lived on his own farm beginning in 1838, eighty-six acres of which was the property inherited by his mother, and part of the original land of Isaac Walker.
He and his wife were members of the U. P. Church; he was a democrat.

He and his wife had seven children; five were still living in 1889.
