He was educated in the public schools and at Duff's College, Pittsburgh. In 1894 he engaged in the wholesale tobacco trade, in which he was highly successful. He was an honored member of Duquesne Lodge No. 546 and Pittsburgh chapter in the Masonic fraternity.
