The Dunbar family of Scotland is one of notable history, holding a prominent position among the Scottish families of noble achievement.

When eighteen years of age he left his home in Belfast, Ireland, and arrived in America at about the close of the war for independence. He settled in Washington County, Pennsylvania, there owning many acres of land, a part of which he cleared, and there passed the remainder of his life.

He was born near Belfast, County Antrim, Ireland, and, being of an advent-urous disposition, became a sailor in early life. He came to America and made a permanent settle-ment on Raccoon creek, Smith township, Washington County, Pennsylvania, where he was obliged to "grub out" a site for the first cabin which he erected; but his energy knew no discouragement, and success at length crowned his efforts.
