General Notes: Husband - Gottfried Orwig

He was born, it is supposed, in Brunswick, Germany, and qualified at the port of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, October 2, 1741, arriving from Rotterdam in the ship "St. Andrew," Charles Stedman, master. His age is given as twenty-two, which corresponds to the tombstone record at Orwigsburg, Pennsylvania. He went to Germany, and brought his wife, Clara, over in 1843.

He and his wife settled in 1743 at Maiden Creek, near Reading, Pennsylvania, on lands purchased from the Iroquois Indians, but afterward removed to Sculp Hill, near Orwigsburg, in Schuylkill County. During the Revolutionary war a company of old men was organized (Germans), eighty in all. Their captain was nearly one hundred years old, and in a history of Pennsylvania the names of this company are given, and Gotfried is among them.
