He was born on the Schuylkill, in Pennsylvania, and his father moved the family to Rockbridge County, Virginia, when he was very young. They were among the earliest settlers in that section, most of whom were Scotch-Irish Presbyterians. He married the daughter of a wealthy landholder of the same colony.
