General Notes: Husband - William Carlyle Alexander

was born on the farm in Findley township, Mercer County, Pennsylvania, and was reared there and obtained his education at the public schools. After leaving the farm he followed teaching school for a time, then became his father's deputy in the prothonotary's office, serving three years under his father and two years longer under his successor. He then accepted a position as bookkeeper in the First National Bank of Mercer in 1869, following the banking business until 1884, being cashier the last three years of the time. His health failed him and hence he sought outside work and was appointed deputy internal revenue collector, which position he filled two years. He then associated with A. E. Graham, engaged in private banking business at Grove City, Pennsylvania. This business continued until 1896. In the meantime, in 1889, he was elected cashier of the First National Bank of Mercer and held this office up to 1896, when he returned to Grove City and converted the private bank into the "First National Bank of Grove City," being associated with the same, as cashier for five years and president five years. Politically Mr. Alexander was a stanch and uncompromising Republican.
