He attended the common schools of Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, where he received his early education, and then became a student in the Laird institute, and, in 1897, graduated from the Slippery Rock State normal school. In the autumn of 1899 he entered the Pittsburgh dental college, from which he graduated in 1902. In April, 1902, he began practicing dentistry in Wilmerding.
He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church, to which his parents also belonged. He was also a member of the Knights of the Golden Eagle, of Turtle Creek.
