He first attended school at Wesley, in Venango County, PA, and later Green High School, in Green Township, Trumbull County, Ohio. He entered the Union Army early in the war of the Rebellion, and served three years and three months in a most creditable manner. He bore the rank of duty sergeant and saw much hard fighting during his enlistment. He was taken captive at Brown's Ferry, but before being removed from the field was rescued by the Union forces. After receiving an honorable discharge he re­turned home and began working at the trade of a carpenter at Oil Creek. He sub­sequently purchased a farm of David Hoover, located one and a half miles south of Eau Claire, in Venango Township, Butler County. He engaged in agricultural pursuits, but de­voted a portion of his time to working at his trade. He later sold off all but seventy-five acres of his land, and moved to Eau Claire, where he purchased a good residential property. He then de­voted himself exclusively to the work of contractor and builder, and erected many of the best buildings throughout that part of the country.
He and his wife were members of the Presbyterian church at Annisville, PA, of which he was a trus­tee. He was a member of Eau Claire Post, No. 538, G. A. R., and was senior vice com­mander of the post. He was a stanch Prohibitionist in politics, and frequently was called upon to fill offices of public trust. He served as clerk and treasurer of Irwin Township, Venango County; was a member of the borough council at Eau Claire and street commissioner. He was trustee and vice-president of the board of Eau Claire Academy.
