She received exceptional educational advantages, attending the public schools of Young township, Indiana County, Pennsylvania, the State normal school at Indiana, Pennsylvania, and the University of Chicago. She taught in Eldersridge Academy, then spent three years teaching in Puerto Rico, and for some years was a teacher of languages in Franklin College, at New Athens, Ohio.
