He was reared in Moon township, Beaver County, Pennsylvania, and educated in the schools of Beaver. He began the study of medicine in 1847 with Dr. Cunningham, entered Starling Medical College, Columbus, Ohio, in 1848, and was graduated in 1851. From 1852 until 1869 he practiced in Moon township, after which he located in Beaver Falls.
