General Notes: Husband - William B. Potter

He spent his early childhood days in Karthaus township, Clearfield County, Pennsylvania, and during his youth also lived in Covington township, Clearfield County. He was educated in the public schools, and reared on the home farm, where he early became familiar with all the duties that fall to the lot of the agriculturist. He remained at home until embarking in business at Karthaus. The building in which he carried on operations was erected in 1884, and was a one and one-half story structure, 24 x 50 feet. Its owner was Mr. Potter's father, who, with his son, R. L. Potter, conducted mercantile business there until 1885, when W. B. purchased his father's interest, and for one year was in partnership with his brother under the firm name of Potter & Potter. In 1886 he purchased his brother's interest, and from that time he was the sole proprietor. In 1892 he raised the building to a two-story structure. He was also the owner of the "Potter House," a three-story building erected in 1884, and which was a leading hotel in Karthaus.
Mr. Potter was a Democrat in politics, and in 1885 was appointed postmaster of Karthaus, serving in that capacity four years. In December, 1895, he was again appointed, and he also served as township auditor. Socially he was a member of Driftwood Lodge No. 532, F. & A. M.
