He was the youngest of sixteen children, and after attending the old-fashioned log school-house in Ohio township, Beaver County, Pennsylvania, he early in life embarked in farming. He owned the old family home farm of 170 acres. He served as vice-president and president of the agricultural society, and also served as school director. He wais a F. & A. M. Politically he was a Democrat.
