He acquired his education in the township schools, and at the academy at Wattsburg, Pennsylvania. At the age of eight­een, he began teaching in Venango township, Erie County, which he continued during the winter terms thereafter, and was a well-known, thorough teacher. He owned his home and 57 acres of land adjoining his father's farm.
