A maternal uncle of hers, Captain Hays, a member of the prominent Pittsburgh family of that name, fought in the war for independence. She had another uncle in that conflict, a minister, who met his death at the hands of some Hessian mercenaries. He was a member of the Continental Congress, but owing to illness was not present at the meeting of that body that ratified the Declaration of Independence. A brother of Christiana Ralston, John H., located at Sharon, Pennsylvania, and was there employed in a tannery, later mov-ing to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, following the same line of work.
