He was elected a member of the General Assembly in 1785, 1786, 1787, and 1791. He was commissioned one of the associate judges of the Chester County Court in the winter of 1793 by Governor Thomas Mifflin.
He married and resigned his judgeship, and removed to the homestead of Col. Lowrey at Marietta, and took the active management of Mr. Lowrey's farm. They had a large family of children.

During the Revolutionary War he was Captain in his father's battalion, afterwards served in the Legislature and was appointed by Governor Mifflin as Associate Judge of Chester County.
