General Notes: Husband - Alexander Ross

He came into possession of "Tipperary Plantation" under the terms of his father William Ross' will. He built a new stone mansion house which was partially destroyed by fire in 1823. The cornerstone bore the inscription "A and M. Ross, Oct. 29, 1788," and was long preserved at Tipperary. This house was totally destroyed by fire in 1893, when another one was built upon the original foundation.
He was a patriot and was connected with the army during the New Jersey campaign in 1776. In March, 1777, he was fined £15 for non-attendance at drill. [Many members of the militia not in active service at the time were occasionally compelled by the condition of their crops or a business emergency to be absent from drill. If they could not send a substitute, they paid the regular fine to which no odium was attached.] He served a Tour of Duty at Camp Security, York County, in 1781 [Camp Security, in the extreme northeastern part of Windsor Township, near Longstown, was where the British prisoners of war were confined.] where his name appears as a witness to a document, and in the same year was with his division at York. He was clerk to the commissary in the New Jersey campaign.
Oct. 9, 1782, Alexander Ross was appointed judge of elections for York County. In 1784 he was appointed collector of the State Supplies for Warrington Township. In 1784-5 he was appointed collector of the Sinking Fund and Eighty-one Emission Tax.
