General Notes: Husband - Joseph Allen

An English Quaker, he emigrated to America about 1770, and about 1772 came to Washington County, Pennsylvania, with his wife, and took out a warrant for a tract of land lying on the Monongahela River, for which he received a patent from Thomas and John Penn dated Dec. 22, 1774. This tract was named "Allenton." Ten years later he took a warrant dated Aug. 31, 1784, for a tract which was surveyed December 15th of that year as "Allen's Delight," and contained three hundred and fifty-four acres. It was situated on the Monongahela River, and was two hundred and twenty-six perches along the river, "adjoining his other land and lands of David England." On the 28th of March, 1799, he divided his real estate, consisting of over eight hundred acres, into eight parts, reserving one for himself and giving one to each of his children except Benjamin. [HWC 1882, 646]

He was a Quaker of eastern Pennsylvania. He came to western Pennsylvania and bought of William Penn a large tract of land near the present Fayette City. This tract was called in his honor "Allen township." He donated the grounds for the Mt. Tabor cemetery, in which several generations of the Allen family were interred, his wife being the first tenant of a grave there. Joseph Allen became a wealthy farmer.

He and his wife were natives of eastern Pennsylvania, and coming to Washington County prior to the Revolution, took up a vast tract of land under a Virginia certificate, and became identified with the earliest history of this county. They were Quakers. [CBRWC, 1370]

He came to Washington County, Pennsylvania, in about 1772, and took out a vast tract of land under Virginia Certificate. They also received a patent from Thomas and John Penn, dated December 2, 1774, for a tract of land lying along the Monongahela River. This tract was named Allentown, later becoming Allen Township, Washington County. Joseph Allen donated the land for a Quaker burying ground. Mt. Tabor Church was built on this cemetery ground. His wife, Deborah (Hill) Allen, was the first occupant of a grave in that cemetery.
