He was educated in the schools of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and at the academy at Lititz. He was brought up in mercantile pursuits, and for many years carried on brick-making extensively; was also engaged in the hardware business about fifteen years, and in 1833 established a glue manufactory at Harrisburg, which he successfully carried on for several years.
