General Notes: Husband - Robert E. Griffith

He was born in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, and received his education in the Greensburg schools. In 1895 he began business in Scottdale under the firm name of Griffith Company, heating and plumbing. He conducted this enterprise for three years, abandoning it in 1898, on the outbreak of the Spanish-American war. He then enlisted in the Tenth Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers, and for one year served in the Philippines, being mustered out of service in San Francisco in 1899. He became superintendent of the Scottdale Heating and Roofing Company on January 1, 1905. He was a member of the Reformed church of Scottdale.

The preliminary portion of his education was received in the local public schools of his native town, and he later attended Leech's Business College in Greensburg for six months, where he took a commercial course. Upon completing his studies in the last-named institution, Mr. Griffith secured a position in the employ of Mr. Harry Griffith, who was engaged in the grocery business in Greensburg. A little later, however, he withdrew from this position and came to Scottdale, where he entered the services of D. A. Potts, who had a successful grocery establishment in that town. Mr. Griffith was at work in this establishment at the outbreak of the Spanish-American War, and was one of the first to respond when the call came for volunteers. He at once enlisted in Company C, which was recruited at Uniontown, Pennsylvania, and which formed a part of the Tenth Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, and served with distinction throughout the war. Upon the close of hostilities, Mr. Griffith returned to Pennsylvania and once more entered the employ of D. A. Potts, with whom he remained until the latter sold out his business. Mr. Griffith then took a position in the plumbing establishment of H. C. Gilchrist, and there served his apprenticeship in this trade. Finally, having diligently put by such of his earnings as he could save, he bought out his employer and started in business on his own account, in partnership with S. G. St. Clair. This was in the year 1914, and some time after, Mr. Griffith purchased the interest of his partner and thereafter conducted the business alone. He employed three or four men. Mr. Griffith was also active in the general life of the community, and was affiliated with Lodge No. 88, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, of Scottdale. He was a staunch supporter of the principles and policies of the Democratic party, but took no very active part in the political activities of the community. He was a member of the Reformed church.
