General Notes: Husband - Van T. Shepler

He was born and remained on a farm until he was six years of age, when his parents removed to Webster, Pennsylvania, where he attended school until he was eighteen years of age. He then served for five years as a clerk in a general store at Coal Center, Washington County, Pennsylvania, for Abell & Reeves, uncles of Mr. Shepler. In 1892 he went to Apollo, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, where he was the manager of a dry goods store for two years. In 1894 he became a member of the dry goods firm of Van T. Shepler & Co., who bought the business formerly conducted by John Grant. In 1897 Mr. Shepler opened a dry goods store at Leechburg, Pennsylvania, and in 1898 opened one at Vandergrift. In 1902 he established a store at Blairsville, Indiana County; in 1905 one at Kittanning, Armstrong County, and a small one at Vandergrift Heights. August, 1903, a corporation was formed under the name of the Van T. Shepler Company (Incorporated), and Mr. Shepler took in the management of the several stores mentioned. He was also director of the Vandergrift Savings & Trust Company of Vandergrift, Pennsylvania.
He was a member of the Masonic fraternity, belonging to Lodge No. 617 at Vandergrift, known as Kiskiminetas. He also belonged to Duquesne Chapter, No. 193, of Pittsburgh; Tankerd Commandery, No. 48, and was advanced to the thirty-second degree Scotish Rites, as well as a Shriner. He also held membership in the Royal Arcanum and Odd Fellows Orders, besides the American Insurance Union. Originally he was a supporter of the Democratic party, but later stood for Republicanism. He was on the school board for four years and took much interest in educational affairs. Both he and his wife were members of the Methodist Episcopal church. He was a thorough-going temperance man.
