General Notes: Husband - Dr. Louis Provance McCormick


After attending the public schools he was sent to the Mount Pleasant Institute in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. He afterwards attended the Bridgeton (New Jersey) Institute, whence he was graduated in the class of 1886. He chose medicine as his profession, and was graduated from the Jefferson Medical College with the degree of Doctor of Medicine in the class of 1891. He located in Connellsville, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, upon graduation, and engaged in general practice. At the outbreak of the war with Spain he was assistant surgeon of the 10th Regiment, Pennsylvania National Guard. He volunteered for active service with his regiment, and was mustered into the United States service at Mount Gretna, Pennsylvania, May 5, 1898; and mustered out August 22, 1899, at San Francisco, California. He served with the 10th Regiment in the Philippines, and was in the battle and capture of Manila by the land forces. He was assigned February 4, 1899, to the United States Gunboat "Laguna de Bay," and during the insurrection of Aguinaldo he saw active service, particularly between February 4 and the following June, in twenty-six engagements. From August 6 to August 14, 1898, he was in charge of the Manila ambulance service. From August 14, 1898, to February 5, 1899, he was on duty at the Reserve Hospital in Manila. In August, 1899, the regiment returned to the United States and was mustered out at San Francisco.
Dr. M'Cormick remained in the National Guard as surgeon for many years. During World War I he served as chairman of the local Draft Board. He also served for a time as president of the local Board of Health. He was a director of the Second National Bank, and was on the surgical staff of the Cottage State Hospital at Connellsville. He was a member of the Fayette County and the Pennsylvania State Medical societies, and the American Medical Association, and the Society of Military Surgeons. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club, of the Yough Medico Social Club, and the Pleasant Valley Country Club; of King Solomon Lodge, No. 346, Free and Accepted Masons; of Connellsville Chapter, Royal Arch Masons; of Uniontown Commandery, Knights Templar; of Uniontown Lodge of Perfection, and of Pittsburgh Consistory, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, having attained the thirty-second degree; and of Syria Temple, Ancient Arabic Order Nobles of the Mystic Shrine. He was commander of the local society, Army of the Philippines. He was a Democrat, extremely independent in his vote. The family attended the Presbyterian Church.
