He was educated in the common and high schools of the county, and then served an apprenticeship in a machine shop. Having become a journeyman, he followed the trade for a short time before entering, in April, 1920, the New Castle Printing Company, as a partner of Mr. Donnan. He was an independent voter in his practice of politics. He was a member of the church board of the First Christian Church, of New Castle.

Under the skillful guidance of two progressive young business men, Reed D. McCullough and J. Wilson Carson, the New Castle Printing Company, of which they are the proprietors, has been brought to a high grade of efficiency, and the plant is one of the best equipped in Lawrence County, Pennsylvania, of which New Castle is the capital. It is with no little satisfaction to the people of this community that they have within their borders a concern of the standing that has been given it by Messrs. McCullough and Carson. Established in 1921 by A. I. Donnan and Reed D. McCullough, the New Castle Printing Company began in a humble way to reach out after the printing business of the city and the county. They had but one press, and their other equipment was correspondingly meager. But they started on the right track, and the people and business houses of that section soon discovered that they were reliable and were bent on doing business with their customers in good faith. Their volume of trade increased with that consistency that meant, under favorable conditions, a steady influx of orders from an ever-widening territory as their field of operations enlarged with the passing of the months and years. An indication or the growth of this establishment may be had from the fact that it now compares favorably with any concern of the kind in Lawrence County. The plant is equipped with modern machines and devices. It is prepared to execute large and exacting orders; gives employment to six persons, a considerable number for a concern of its size in the city of New Castle, and it makes use of 2,000 square feet of floor space. In the fall of 1924 Mr. Donnan relinquished his interest in the company, and it was acquired by Mr. Carson, who thereupon became a co-partner with Mr. McCullough. [PAH 1926, 390]
