He was born in Mercer County, Pennsylvania, and was about thirteen years of age when his parents moved to Slippery Rock. He received his educational training in the district schools of Mercer and Lawrence Counties, and throughout his entire life engaged in farming. During the last fourteen years of his life he raised berries quite extensively, a business which proved very remunerative.
