He was born in Connoquenessing township, Butler County, PA, was reared on the farm, and learned the carpenter's trade, which business he followed for many years. In September, 1862, he located on a homestead in Buffalo township. He was a member of the Lutheran church, and filled the office of elder for thirty years. Politically, he was a Repub­lican, and served as school director, and filled other minor positions.
