The Floyds were all of a special mechanical turn of mind, and generally speaking were carpenters by trade. His maternal grandfather was a sea captain.
In his native town, he was reared and obtained a common school education and there mastered the carpenter's trade, serving seven years under his father until he reached twenty-one years of age. He then came to the United States, in 1869, spending three years in New York state, and in 1873 located at East Brady, Pennsylvania, where he followed contracting until 1876, when he went to Bruin, Pennsylvania, where he carried on the same line of work in a successful manner until May 13, 1882, when he permanently located at Grove City. There he followed contracting and building for over twenty-three years, during which period he built many private residences and business houses in Grove City.
For about a decade he was engaged in the lumber trade, and builders' general supplies. He was highly successful in a financial way, and was one of the directors of the First National Bank, besides being a stockholder in other Grove City enterprises. When he came to America he had but a limited capital upon which to base his operations, but by much hard labor and the possession of an excellent business judgment, he moved to the front rank among his fellow workers in his adopted country.
He was one of the charter members of Grove City Lodge No. 603, Free and Accepted Masons; also a member of the Knights Templar degree. In his church connection he was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church. In his political belief he favored the Republican party.

He had two children with his first wife and one son with his second wife.
