General Notes: Husband - Thomas H. Forcey

He was one the largest lumber manufacturers of Clearfield County, Pennsylvania, and was also engaged in the banking business.

He had the advantage of wholesome country life in his youth, being reared at the old home farm. In 1859 he engaged in the lumber business at Grahamton, Clearfield County, Pennsylvania, dealing in square timber at first. He conducted a sawmill, and built up an extensive trade in both lumber and timber, sending from forty to fifty rafts down the Susquehanna each year. He also became interested in the mercantile business, while he owned about five thousand acres of valuable land, including timber, agricultural, and coal properties.
Shortly after the organization of the Clearfield County National Bank, in February, 1865, he was its elected vice-president, which position he held until 1882, when he was elected president on the death of former President J. T. Leonard. Beginning in 1881 he made his home at Clearfield in order to give closer attention to the management of this institution. He was a Democrat politically, but his influence was exerted in a quiet way. In religious views he was a Presbyterian, and for many years he held the office of trustee in the Church.

The year 1861 was an eventful one in Mr. Forcey's business career. He had been for some years engaged in manufacturing and rafting lumber to the markets down the river, and having no capital save a good and well used credit, he was considerably in debt. He had at that time no less than twenty-eight rafts lying in the river awaiting sale. Other large dealers had their rafts in the same place, and were selling at "five cents." Mr. Forcey's had cost him eight cents, and to sell at five meant financial ruin. The war was imminent, and rafting through Maryland was hazardous. Old rivermen advised him to sell, but he determined to hold on. A proposition was offered by a party of raftsmen that they would take the chances of getting the rafts safely through the state of Maryland, and thence by the usual route to New York City, at an expense of five cents additional per foot, and wait for their pay until a sale was made. To this Mr. Forcey assented, and the task attempted, and, fortunately, successfully accomplished. The next year, 1862, he sold at fifteen cents, and pocketed a handsome profit as the result of his good judgment.
