He learned the trade of a carpenter, at which he worked for twelve years in West Virginia. He then removed to Hanover, Pa., and engaged in the grocery business, in which he made an ample fortune. He was a director of the Hanover Junction, Hanover & Gettysburg Railroad, the Berlin Branch Railroad, the Baughman Valley Railroad, the Hanover & Baltimore Railroad and the Baltimore, Gettysburg & Harrisburg Railroad. He was also a director of the First National Bank of Hanover and the Hanover Gas Co., and was president and superintendent of the Hanover Water Co. He was chosen a county commissioner of York County in 1880, and burgess of Hanover in 1885.
