He was the only child of his father. His mother dying when he was two days old, his early life was spent with his grandmother, Mrs. Dr. Louis Marchand. His early education was received in the public schools, his business education in Iron City Commercial College and the business world. His farm was worked by tenants under his direction. He devoted most of his time to the coal business.
