General Notes: Husband - George Fortney


He was the founder of the Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, branch of the Fortney family. He was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and when a young man came to Westmoreland County, settling near the Ridge church, in Mount Pleasant township. At first he worked as a carpenter, but later became a wagoner on the mountain road leading from Pittsburgh to Philadelphia.

He came to Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania from Lancaster County, when a young man and settled near the Ridge Church in Mount Pleasant township. He was a carpenter by trade, but soon abandoned it, succumbing to the lure of the old National Pike life which attracted so many teamsters and drivers during the years it was the popular highway for passengers and freight between the East and the West. He was a wagoner, driving over a section of the pike for several years, and died at a good old age.
