He was born in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, where he followed his trade as a millwright during his active life. He reared five sons and three daughters. [BOBBC, 303] But the names given for these offspring don't coincide with the names given by other sources.

He was a farmer of Lawrence County, Pennsylvania, two miles north of Plain Grove.
