He was born near Hagerstown, Maryland, but the family came at an early period to Union County, Pennsylvania, meeting with some losses from Indian raids in the pioneer days. He was a clock maker by trade, and died at the age of seventy-one.
He and his wife were consistent members of the Lutheran Church.

He and his wife were the parents of twelve children, nine lived to maturity.
