He was largely engaged in oil production in Venango County, Pennsylvania, during his active years. When a young man he rafted oil down the creek.
He was a much respected citizen of Cornplanter Township, a zealous member of the school board, and gave a piece of land from his farm for the site of the Rossman schoolhouse there; he was also a director of the Shaffer Run school. Politically he was a Democrat, in religion a Methodist.
