General Notes: Husband - Angus McKenzie

After his marriage, he immigrated to America, landing at Baltimore, Maryland. He then proceeded to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, from there to Crawford County, and after a residence of about eight years in this country found his way to Venango County. The land on which he settled was purchased from Oliver Ormsby, of Pittsburgh; it was situated in the valley of Sugar creek adjoining the line of Jackson township, and formed part of an extensive body of level land known as “the prairie.”

He came to Pittsburgh in 1796 and bought three lots, near where the market-house later stood, the site of the lots being then known as the Black Bear, and the same site on which a hotel, called the Black Bear, later stood. He remained there about four years. He then traded his lots for a tract of land, situated on Sugar creek, about twenty miles northwest of Franklin. In the trade he received two hundred acres of land, a yoke of oxen, a mare, and a wagon. He then started to hunt Samuel Dale, who was the Surveyor of the county, and found him near the French Fort. He procured his assistance, and after traveling four or five days, they found the land in what was then known as the “Indian Country.” Foutstown was later built on the farm. On the way from Pittsburgh his fortune was told by a hotel-keeper, by the name of Carver, who kept a hotel where Chapmanville was located. He remarked to Mr. McKenzie that he had come out to spend his fortune, and have nothing upon which to return. But it proved far otherwise, for the first year he had two acres cut off by Andrew Piper, Mr. McKenzie “logging” it together, and burning it himself. It was then “dragged,” by using the fork of a tree with pins driven in, and used as a harrow is now. It was sown in wheat, and yielded forty bushels to the acre. He was a member of the Presbyterian church, the nearest one being situated on the old Beatty farm, later owned by Wm. List.
