He was the only child of his parents, and spent his life in Beaver County, Pennsylvania. Early in life he clerked in a store. In 1883 he became a clerk in the First National Bank, of Rochester, and after 1886 was assistant cashier; he resigned his position in the First National Bank of Rochester, Pennsylvania, to accept the cashiership of the First National Bank of Beaver, Pennsylvania. In politics he was a Republican. He was a member of the Presbyterian church, at Beaver, and a trustee.
