He received his early education in the public schools, and worked on his father's farm until he was seventeen years of age. He learned the trade of plasterer, and later worked for some time in the woods as a lumberman, and then pur­chased a farm of one hundred acres in Wash­ington township, Clarion County, PA. He later purchased a residence and six acres of land at what was known as Frill's Corner, in Washington town­ship, where he established a general store. He was a Republican in politics, and held several local public offices. He was one of the committeemen of Washington township.
