He was born on the family homestead farm in Connoquenessing township, Butler County, Pennsylvania. By his parents' will the old homestead was divided between himself and his brother Charles. He afterwards purchased his brother's interest and became the sole owner.
He was an elder in the German Reformed church of Zelienople, and in politics, a Democrat.
