He was educated in the public schools and in Millersville State Normal, where he took a thorough commercial course. After a year's experience on his father's farm he engaged in the mercantile business in Irwin, Pennsylvania, the firm name being Hartje & Gaut. At the expiration of five years he embarked in the real estate and insurance business, which he carried on for five years. He was then appointed postmaster at Irwin by President Cleveland.
