Obituary:
J. E. Allison Dies At Home Here
Well Known Resident of Peterson Is Buried Here Saturday
J. E. Allison, former Peterson banker, died at his home here Wednesday. June 12th. He had been bedfast for a couple of weeks but was able to enjoy the home activities of his granddaughter's wedding on the Sunday before his death. He became unconscious Tuesday and remained so until his death which came peacefully shortly after noon on Wednesday.
Mr. Allison had been prominent in civic circles until ill health forced him to remain at his home. He had been a member of the town council for many years and was a member of the first library board which did the preliminary work for the construction of the Kirchner-French Memorial library here. He was a member of the school board at Marathon for many years while a resident of that town.
Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at the Fastenow Funeral Home. Music was furnished by Mrs. Oral Anderson and Mrs. Chas. Plagman, with Mrs. Harry Peterson as accompanist. Casket bearers were S. H. Wareham, H. G. Morrison, Adolph Tigges, R. E. Sitz, Olin Anderson and Dr. W. N. Gaston. Interment was in the family lot in the cemetery here.
Floral offerings were profuse and beautiful. Some funds given by friends in his memory were given to the Salvation Army drive. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. J. A. Frieboes of the Congregational church. Welcome Lodge, A. F. & A. M. had charge of the services at the grave with L. D. Schultz delivering the lecture at the grave.
James Elmer Allison, son of James and Mary Ann Mason Allison, was born on a farm in Venango County, near Franklin, Pennsylvania, September 29, 1862.
He spent a normal boyhood on the farm, helping with the farm tasks, growing up with his two sisters and three brothers, and attending country school. He attended State Normal school at Edinborough, Pennsylvania, where he graduated after a two-year normal training course.
After teaching school in Pennsylvania for a short time, he came west to Grundy Center, Iowa, in 1882, and taught school in a country school in Grundy County that year. The next year, he taught school near Rockwell City in Calhoun County. In 1884, he moved to Holt County, Nebraska, where he homesteaded a cattle ranch and taught school one year.
He entered the Citizens Bank at Atkinson, Nebraska, as assistant cashier in 1886, and in 1893 was elected cashier of the Exchange Bank at Atkinson.
He was united in marriage to Cora Jane Burleson of Atkinson at the home of his brother in Onslow, Iowa, August 30, 1887. To this union, two children were born, June Ella and Lester James. He was preceded in death by his son Lester, who died April 19, 1918, and his wife, who died June 26, 1942.
After 11 years as cashier of the Exchange Bank at Atkinson, Mr. Allison brought his family to Peterson, Iowa, in 1898, where he became assistant cashier of the First National Bank. He spent the year 1899 in Havelock, Iowa, as cashier of the bank there, and then returned to Peterson as cashier. In 1900, he moved to Marathon, Iowa, as cashier of the First National Bank of Marathon.
In 1912, he returned to Peterson, having purchased his brother's interest in the Peterson Bank, and became a partner of the late Frank J. and Leo L. Steckmest. He retired from the banking business in 1932, following the death of Frank J. Steckmest, and for the past six years has largely confined his activities to his home In Peterson.
He is survived by his daughter Mrs. Roy A. Jarnagin of Peterson; one sister, Mrs. Clara Beatty of Bartlesville, Oklahoma; three grandchildren, Robert and Margery Jarnagin or Dee Moines, and Mrs. A. M. Anderson of Rossie; and a host of other relatives and friends,
Everyone who knew James Elmer Allison was his friend, and they were countless. He was the most generous and kindly of men, and he was known and respected as an exceptionally capable banker and businessman in every community in which he lived. He was well known in Iowa banking circles. His family was his primary interest in life, and remained so all his days. His able and analytical mind remained clear and penetrating until the last. He was a wonderful father and grandfather, and death came peacefully and just as he wished.
He was long a member of the Methodist church of Franklin, Pennsylvania, and joined the Congregational church in Peterson by declaration of faith while Rev. J. E. Ball was the pastor here. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge for 57 years.
