General Notes: Husband - George Webster Shaffer


He enlisted April 20, 1917, one month before his seventeenth birthday, in Troop F. 101st Cav.; transferred to Com­pany C, 103rd Engineers December 17, trained at Camp Hancock, Augusta, GA; sailed for foreign service from New York, May 18, 1918, (eighteenth birthday); sailed from Dover, England, and landed at Calais, France, June 1, 1918; trained for two weeks with English troops and then joined the American troops at Marne River. Partici­pated in the following engagements; Champagne-Marne, Aisne-Marne, Oise-Aisen, Meuse-Argonne, and St. Mihiel Defensive Sector. Sailed for home from St. Nazaire, April 20, 1919, aboard U. S. S. Finland and landed at Hoboken, NJ, May 1, 1919. Discharged at Ft. Dix, May 16, 1919. As if his services in War I were not enough, he enlisted for service in World II in August, 1942, and was called September 23, 1942, for basic training at Ft. Knox, KY; sent to Camp Campbell Replacement Base in January, 1943, and on March 1, 1943, was sent over seas; six weeks later he was in North Africa with a Replacement group. He desired service with the Combat Forces, but on account of his age, was assigned to the 191st M. P. Company.
