He was a native of Northampton County, Pennsylvania, and was of German extraction. He emigrated to Westmoreland County, settling in Mt. Pleasant township where he resided until his death. He was a Whig and a member of the Reformed church. [BHCWC, 451]

He was born and reared in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, and there followed the occupation of a farmer and distiller all his active working life, in Mount Pleasant township. In religious faith he was a member of the German Reformed church. [HWC 1906 iii, 299]
