He received his education in the pub­lic schools, and learned the trade of blacksmith in his native town. In 1870 he moved to Allen township, Washington County, Pennsylvania, where he continued his trade, and in connection carried on agriculture. He was actively interested in the Republican party, and he and his wife were members of the Disciple Church.
