General Notes: Husband - Henry Medary Wilson

He was reared in Franklin and Erie, Pennsylvania, his parents removing to the latter place when he was thirteen years old. He received a good common school education, and later attended the school at Lawrenceville, New Jersey. Early in the civil war period he made several attempts to enlist in the army, but was rejected on account of his extreme youth. His father, who at the time was quartermaster-general of the state, finally placed him in a position in his department, where he was occupied for three years, being then transferred to Buffalo, New York, where he remained two years. Returning home he read law for two years in the office of Judge John S. McCalmont, at Franklin, Pennsylvania. Attracted to the west by the reports of successful mining operations, he spent several months in the Rocky Mountain region, prospecting and investigating mines. Not successful, however, in a pecuniary way, he returned to Franklin and engaged in the oil business at Fagundus, Bullion and elsewhere. In 1880 he abandoned well operations and accepted a position at Bradford, Pennsylvania, with S. G. Bayne, one of the most widely known oil well supply men in the country. A few years later, Mr. Bayne went to New York City and organized the Seaboard National Bank, taking as a partner in the machinery and supply business, Mr. Wilson, who from that time was the manager of the extensive interests of the firm, which had taken the form of Bayne, Wilson & Pratt, with headquarters in Pittsburgh, Mr. Wilson in the meantime having moved his residence from Bradford to Franklin in 1890. In 1894, Mr. Wilson organized the National Supply Company, which came to be one of the largest oil well and general machinery supply companies in the world, maintaining a central supply store in every oil field in Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, and farther west. Mr. Wilson was a prime mover in all these large enterprises and their great success was due in large measure to his sagacity and broad practical knowledge. His integrity was unquestioned, and he was known as one of the most popular and most widely known men in the entire region. He was of a sunny and optimistic nature, attracting many friends and was universally esteemed for his manly virtues and social qualities. He was a thirty-second degree Mason. [GPHAV, 674]
