At 90 Mrs. A. D. Vogan [sic] has zest for life; had Sandy Lake store
By Lyda Kelly
More than 100 family members and friends attended an open reception at the Sandy Lake home of Mrs. A. D. Vogan, honoring her mother-in-law, Mrs. Harvey W. Vogan, also of Sandy Lake, on the occasion of her 90th birthday anniversary. Co-hosting the event were Mrs. R. C. Vogan, Mercer, and their daughter-in-law, and a son and wife, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Vogan, Mooers, N. Y.
A yellow motif, accented with deep rose, white and green, was used in decorating the birthday cake and for the floral centerpiece. Granddaughters of the honoree, Mrs. Glenn Dye, Mrs. John Hamilton, Mrs. Lester Evans, Mrs. Marta Wells, and Mrs. Frank Rhodes, were aides.
The honoree received many gifts, flowers, cards and messages from persons at a distance.
Mrs. Vogan was born in Mineral Township, Venango County, on Oct. 13, 1883 to Isaac and Nancy Cook Gadsby. She attended Beach and St. John's schools in Mercer County, and Pleasant Valley School in Venango County, prior to attending the Sandy Lake Institute for a three-year course. She taught for one year at Carmichael School in Mercer County, with a total of eight grades.
She married Harvey W. Vogan, of Sandy Lake on Sept. 1, 1903 and they began housekeeping in the old Feather building in Sandy Lake, and also lived on Franklin Road and High Street prior to moving over the grocery store which she and her husband acquired from his father. They operated the store on Main Street, Sandy Lake for 40 years.
The family consisted of three sons, Dr. Roland C. Vogan, Mercer and Sandy Lake physician, and Dr: Alton D. Vogan, Sandy Lake dentist, both deceased, and Paul E. Vogan, Mooers, N. Y., 15 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren complete the family circle.
Mrs. Vogan has been a dedicated and devoted member of the Sandy Lake Wesleyan Church since 1908, having served 40 years as a Sunday School teacher, in various church offices, president of the Missionary Society for 30 years, secretary of the Allegheny Conference of the church for 14 years, in charge of class records and temperance superintendent of the church. She has also been sunshine chairman of the Lakeview Golden Age Club since its first year of existence, and a faithful member of the Women's Christian Temperance Union of Sandy Lake and Stoneboro.
Mrs. Vogan has also had a career as a correspondent for area newspapers — working for the Record Argus for some 30 years, for the Sharon Herald 14 years, and a short time for an Oil City paper. Her writing ability has continued very strong and she keeps in close touch with family members and friends by letters.
Recalling events of the past, the nonagenarian mentioned the serious floods in Sandy Lake, when the dam broke and people had to travel up and down Main Street in boats, and a number of bad fires, including the Feather block in 1909 or 1910. She also noted the great difference in prices during her lifetime, and said milk was ??? quart when she went to housekeeping, and a large loaf of bread was 10c.
Mrs. Vogan has many interests, which attributes to her wonderful outlook on life. just recently she had a flower show outside of her home still cares for her plants outdoors. She does a great amount of handwork, embroidering and knitting, and also has done ceramics at the classes a Lakeview Senior Citizen Center in Stoneboro. She says she has a good appetite and sleeps well and was blessed with a ??? husband, a good family, and continues to have interest in the church which she attends regularly, including worship services, Sunday School, ??? meetings, and missionary society gatherings.
