He received his preparatory education in the common schools, graduating from the State Normal school, Indiana County, Pennsylvania, in the class of 1889. During the succeeding five years he taught in Derry township and then took up the study of medicine. He read for one year under Dr. Banks, of Livermore, entered Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, and in 1896 graduated therefrom with the degree of Doctor of Medicine. The same year he opened an office and began practice in New Alexandria. He was a Republican in politics, and a Reformed Presbyterian in religion.
